School Crime Stoppers

We are aware of the potential for violence, drugs and crime amongst today’s youth. As a result, the Crime Stoppers Student Program was implemented in the York Region Secondary panels. The Student Crime Stoppers program ensures that tipsters remain anonymous. Telephone calls are received in the same manner as all other Crime Stoppers tips. The reward is paid when the information provided by the tipster leads to the person(s) accountability for committing the criminal offence. This does not always mean it must lead to an arrest but also can include a successful conclusion. At an early stage in the investigation, the Police and the School Administration will jointly determine whether the matter will be investigated by the police or by school officials. We anticipate that the Student Crime Stoppers will expand through out schools in York Region and will include other awareness issue campaigns. This will result in a proactive program designed specifically for students; empowering them to take action in their communities and utilize an effective communication tool. It encourages individual reflection about the cause and effect of behaviour, and aspires to exercise good character attributes.
