Since 2007, the Annual Crime Stoppers Student Symposium has brought together thousands of secondary school students from across York Region in a safe, engaging, and educational environment. To date, more than 6,000 students have participated, gaining valuable insight into real-world issues that impact youth every day.

Each year, the symposium focuses on a timely crime trend or social issue—topics have included human trafficking, bullying, social responsibility, gangs, and sextortion. Through keynote presentations from law enforcement professionals and community experts, students are empowered with knowledge and practical tools to help prevent and report crime.

Thanks to generous community support, the event is offered at no cost to schools or students. Crime Stoppers provides bus transportation, a catered lunch, prizes, and swag for all attendees.

A Unique Educational Partnership

The symposium’s impact has been so strong that both the public and Catholic school boards have integrated it into their curriculum as a class project. Each year, students create a viral-style social media post—either an image or short video—that aligns with the symposium’s theme. These creative submissions help spread important safety messages among peers while raising awareness of how to use Crime Stoppers to address the featured issue.

Participating teachers and students receive Crime Stoppers swag, and the best entries are awarded a “Crime Stoppers Cash Reward.” Winners are recognized live on stage during the symposium, celebrating their creativity and commitment to making a difference.

The Annual Student Symposium continues to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation to stand against crime—one conversation at a time.
