PUBLIC ASSISTANCE SOUGHT IN HISTORICAL MISSING YOUTH CASE
York Regional Police is seeking public assistance in the continuing investigation into the disappearance of a 12-year-old youth from the Town of Georgina in the summer of 1968.
York Regional Police took carriage of this missing person case from the Ontario Provincial Police in October 2008 and since then have conducted a thorough and extensive review of the original investigation, including following up on new information and re-interviewing witnesses and family members. Investigators are now seeking any information members of the public may have about this incident and are also asking anyone who has previously spoken to police to come forward again.
On August 3, 1968, Robert BROWN was babysitting his sister while his mother worked at the Nazarene Church camp on Pefferlaw Road. During the afternoon, Robert’s mother took him swimming at the Georgina Township Park on Holmes Point Road. They left the park at approximately 4 p.m. returning to the Nazarene Church camp. Initially, Robert was going to have supper at the camp with his mother before going home to deliver papers, but he changed his mind, telling his mother he would walk to their home in Wilfridd and return to the camp later on his bike. Robert advised his mother that if he did not return for supper she was not to worry about him, as he would be hanging around the house. He left the camp on foot.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Robert was seen leaving the camp on foot and heading towards the beach by a witness who was camping in the area. At approximately 4:45 p.m. Robert was seen in the beach area by another camper who had seen Robert and his mother earlier that day. At 5:30 p.m., Robert was observed by two teenagers from Pefferlaw standing near the Oakes Restaurant (which does not exist today) on Holmes Point Road. This was the last time he was seen.
Robert was a young, energetic boy who enjoyed playing hockey and riding his bike. He also delivered newspapers for the Toronto Telegram. Robert BROWN was described as 5’4” tall, 85 lbs., with blond hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a red and black plaid shirt, a pair of blue jeans and black work boots.
